Ann Robinson, Midwifery Lecturer, University of Surrey

Ann has spent most of her professional life working in clinical practice, predominantly as a labour ward midwife at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London and teaching within Higher Education, at The University of Southampton and The University of Surrey.

As a lecturer in midwifery at the University of Surrey she spent many years as Director of Studies for the Pre-Registration Midwifery programmes. Whilst focusing on pre-registration education Ann also undertook the role of Approved Midwife Teacher. She has recently transferred her focus to Continuing Professional Development and she enjoys her responsibilities and contact with qualified practitioners as Director of Studies on the MSc Advanced Practice programme.

Ann’s areas of expertise encompass intrapartum care, sexual health and research methodology. She supervises students at undergraduate and postgraduate level and has published, specifically in relation to phenomenology. Ann runs undergraduate and postgraduate modules focusing on high risk midwifery care, managing midwifery practice and women’s health and wellbeing. She has always been interested in women’s health and currently has a contract with a local PCT to run a sexual health clinic weekly for teenagers.

Ann is currently in the final stages of her own PhD studies at the University of Southampton. She has enjoyed excellent research supervision and has benefitted on multiple levels from this opportunity. Her research title is ‘A critical analysis of the role of the consultant midwife: Perspectives from consultant midwives and stakeholders’.

She is an active member of the Royal College of Midwives.
