Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan, Greater Manchester Police, ACPO Lead on Restorative Justice

Originally from Sunderland, Garry Shewan moved to Manchester in 1981 to study Sociology. After achieving a Master’s in Criminology and following a period working as a lecturer, Garry joined Greater Manchester Police in 1987.

Garry has extensive experience of policing with the GMP, including his design of a ‘township’ policing model in 1993 – a forerunner of Neighbourhood Policing. He was also the architect of City Centre Safe; tackling alcohol related violence and was a key commander during the 2002 Commonwealth Games. In 2003 Garry was appointed as Basic Command Unit (BCU) Commander of the Bury Division, where he designed the Safe Bury initiative, which saw the development of joint police and local authority teams tackling community priorities.

Appointed Assistant Chief Constable with Cheshire in July 2005, Garry held responsibility for the Territorial Policing and Partnerships and latterly the portfolio of Crime and Specialist Operations.

Returning to Greater Manchester Police in June 2009, Garry oversees the Citizen Focus portfolio. He is also the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) lead for both Restorative and Community Justice, as well as Stalking and Harassment.
