Steve Hirons
Steve’s main teaching responsibilities are lecturing in Mineralogy and Metamorphic petrology at level 4 and 5 (respectively) in Higher Education. He has a strong interest in learning and teaching aided by technology and he has gained a number of awards for innovative teaching. Another important aspect of his job is student support and development and it is this pastoral role, combined with the flexible access to learning materials through a VLE, which includes lecture notes, videos of lectures and videocasts that has led to a significant increase in student retention over the past three years.
Steve was appointed to Director of CLPD in October 2010, where his expertise in technology enhanced learning was at the forefront of staff development and raising awareness and the use of their virtual learning environment. This position also gives Steve a greater opportunity to influence College policy, the decision making process and feeds directly into improving student retention.
