Professor Jill Schofield is the Dean of the York Management School at The University of York and was formally the endowed Somers Chair of Healthcare Management at the University of Edinburgh Business School.

She has been involved as a practicing health services manager, researcher, teacher and public policy analyst, in the UK and abroad for 32 years. Her specialist area is healthcare management both within the public and private sectors including the private medical insurance industry.

Jill has advised on numerous capital investment projects for health and social care and PPP / PFI projects for education and health facilities both in the UK and overseas where she has worked directly doing field based research in Ireland, Canada, Thailand, South Korea, China and Norway. In China, she was part of a Scottish knowledge sharing team advising on the challenges involved in co-ordinating healthcare provision to the Chinese Director Generals (DGs) of Human Resources (HR).

Over her career she has also been extensively involved in management development for top teams including clients such as Carillion, Tarmac, Biffa, Balfour Beatty and Hoechst Chemicals. Most recently, together with colleagues from The Peninsular Medical School she has published on the management of healthcare networks in Cardiac Services and Children’s Services in the UK

Additionally, her research interests include the implementation of policy initiatives and the operation of the policy process across the not for profit and public sectors and in particular how managers learn to adopt new working practices and what motivates them to do so. A second major strand to her research involves understanding the operation of intersectoral and interagency working, particularly around the organizational consequences of partnership and collaborative activity.

Her most recent projects have included a study of professional partnerships in health care; the management and effectiveness of healthcare networks and the research information needs of healthcare managers in Scotland for The Chief Scientist’s Office. Her current research project is part of a multi centre study about the implementation of e- prescribing.
