Professor Chen has been in his current role since 2015. He was previously vice-president of Peking University, dean of its graduate school and founding dean of the College of Engineering. Prior to that, he served as deputy director of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los Alamos National Laboratory and department chair of mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
